I had the pleasure of offering a seminar on The Hard Times Guide at my Grinnell College reunion (Class of 1976) earlier this month. Grinnell has provided videotape of the session, which featured a lively Q&A with former classmates, including Bill Ferguson, now an economist at Grinnell. Bill and I got into a lively discussion on how to protect Social Security for future generations.

Also attending was one of my favorite people in the world, retired Grinnell historian and mentor Don Smith; I even had the opportunity to toss a pop quiz question his way.

Although the video is a bit dark, sound quality is good and the Powerpoint slides are legible!

Thanks to everyone who came out to hear me talk with Gail Marks Jarvis of the Chicago Tribune about The Hard Times Guide to Retirement Security on Saturday at the Chicago Tribune Printers Row Lit Fest.

We had a wonderful crowd, and Gail came prepared with great questions covering everything from retirement saving strategy to working longer, Social Security and the expense of health care in retirement. We both had the opportunity to meet readers and sign books, too.

Gail is the author of Saving for Retirement without Living Like a Pauper or Winning the Lottery.

I’ll be speaking at the Chicago Tribune Printers Row Lit Fest on June 12th.

The Printers Row Lit Fest was founded in 1985 by the Near South Planning Board to attract visitors to the Printers Row neighborhood (once the city’s bookmaking hub). By 2002, it had grown to five city blocks (on Dearborn, from Congress to Polk), attracting more than 200 booksellers from across the country displaying new, used and antiquarian books, and featuring seven stages with more than 100 free literary programs.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the written word and its support of literacy and literary endeavor, the Chicago Tribune purchased the Printers Row Book Fair in 2002 from the Near South Planning Board. Recently renamed to be the Printer’s Row Lit Fest, it is considered the largest free outdoor literary event in the Midwest-drawing more than 125,000 book lovers to the two-day showcase.

I’ll be at the Florida Boomer Lifestyle Conference in Tampa on April 14th and 15th to talk about The Hard Times Guide. This year’s conference focuses on Reinventing Life After 50. This year’s conference explores how Florida boomers are reinventing their lives personally, professionally, physically and spiritually.

On the 14th, I’ll be speaking at a pre-conference event for consumers titled How to Live, Survive, and Thrive in the New Gig Economy. This session will provide advice for those dealing with downsizing, involuntary early retiremen and mid-life career transition.

On the 15th, I’ll be talking to marketers targeting the 50+ market about trends affecting boomers in the new economy.

I’ll be talking about The Hard Times Guide to Retirement Security at several sessions of the Aging in America conference in Chicago this month. This is the annual conference of the National Council on Aging and the American Society on Aging, and it’s the largest gathering of multidisciplinary professionals from the fields of aging, healthcare and education.

This boot camp is part of the What’s Next Boomer Business Summit. Friday March 19th: What’s Next Boomer Business Summit

Entrepreneurship and Partnering. This session will look at case histories of successful entrepreneurs. They’ll be talking about what inspired them to start businesses, and how partnerships have contributed to their success.

Financing Your Life. In the wake of the financial rollercoaster of the past two years, the net worth of many boomers is tied into their homes. Zillow.com’s Chief Economist Dr. Stan Humphries will talk about where boomers are moving, what kind of housing they are buying, and what factors are influencing their purchasing and relocation decisions. Other panelists joining me include Marty Bel of the  National Aging in Place Council and Linda Hollinger-Smith, Ph.D., Vice President, Mather Lifeways Institute on Aging.
